Modern Perspectives in the Calculus of Variations

Dates: 16–18 November 2026

Location: Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Mechanics, University of Warsaw, Poland

Website: Official event website

About the event
The workshop will explore modern perspectives in the calculus of variations, with emphasis on regularity theory, geometric variational problems, nonlinear PDEs, and related analytical techniques. Particular attention will be paid to phenomena arising from strong nonlinearities, degeneracies, and singular structures, which are ubiquitous in realistic models and often give rise to unexpected mathematical phenomena. This includes, but is not limited to, the timely topics of optimal transport, spatially inhomogeneous growth and highly nonlinear partial differential equations.

Organizers: Karol Bołbotowski (University of Warsaw), Iwona Chlebicka (University of Warsaw), Wojciech Górny (University of Warsaw)

Gradient flows and their perturbations in modeling, analysis, and geometry

Dates: 5–9 July 2027

Location: The Mathematical Research and Conference Center, Będlewo, Poland

Website: Official event website

About the event
The aim of the workshop is to gather experts who study phenomena that share the structure or feature of gradient flows. In particular, the question if a perturbation (resp. a limit) of a gradient flow (resp. flows) is still a gradient flow is a central one, together with the study of singularities and the identification of special solutions and their stability. Besides the mathematical theory, applications of gradient flows can be found to the modeling of physical phenomena and industrial processes. This workshop aims to reflect the breadth of the current work related to theoretical foundations as well as applications to problems both motivated by physics and quite abstract, e.g., in differential geometry. We also want to include the modeling and computational aspects of the research.

We single out the following leading themes of the workshop:
  • Dissipative phenomena in continuum mechanics
  • Geometric flows
  • Flows in measure spaces, metric random walk spaces, and similar
  • Models exploiting Cahn–Hilliard type equations
  • Free boundary problems, with a special emphasis on Stefan problems
